Flu vaccination policy

Flu vaccination policy during the COVID-19 pandemic

  1. Requirement of flu vaccination. A flu vaccination for the 2020–21 flu season is required for all persons who are regularly present on campus for their studies or their work.
    • Students: by January 15, 2021, for students who are not studying or working on campus after Nov. 20; by Dec. 1, 2020, for students who are studying or working on campus after Nov. 20.
    • Employees: by Dec. 1, 2020, for employees whose work requires them to be regularly present on campus between Dec. 1, 2020, and March 1, 2021.
    • Employees of vendors and contractors: by Dec. 1, 2020, for employees of vendors and contractors whose work requires them to be regularly present on campus between Dec. 1, 2020, and March 1, 2021, and whose work regularly places them in close proximity with the general campus population.
    • This interim policy does not apply to commercial delivery services whose presence on campuses is considered a short duration to deliver materials, food, or mail.
  1. Affirmation of compliance. Each student or IU employee subject to the requirement must affirm, by the respective due date, that either –
    • They have received a qualifying flu vaccination,
    • They will not be regularly present on campus between Dec. 1, 2020, and March 1, 2021,
    • They are allergic or have another bona fide medical reason that a flu vaccination is contraindicated, or
    • They have a religious or equally fervent ethical objection to receiving a flu vaccination, and have never previously received a flu vaccination for this reason.

Falsification of this form can result in termination or expulsion from the university.

Vendors and contractors who have employees subject to this policy must certify ongoing compliance to the relevant contracting officer.

  1. Obtaining flu vaccinations. IU has purchased a larger number of doses of the flu vaccine this year, and IU will hold vaccination clinics on all campuses. However, IU cannot obtain enough doses to vaccinate all students and employees. Therefore, individuals are urged, if feasible, to obtain their flu vaccinations at non-IU locations, such as personal physicians, pharmacy clinics, public vaccination clinics, and (for students) locations at their permanent residence.
